They did an experiment in a restaurant, where they started to include a piece of candy with every bill.

RESULT:

-> INCREASE in the tips amounts by 3-5%

Experiment # 2 :

Instead of leaving one piece ofcandy, they started to include two pieces.

RESULT:

-> INCREASE in tipping to around 15 % of the bill.

Experiment # 3:

They INSTRUCTED the waitress to place one piece of candy with the bill, walk away for about 10 to 15 seconds, and then return to drop off a second piece of candy.

RESULT:

-> INCREASE in tips to 23%

ANALYSIS:

This is entirely due to HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY. We could even call it "ETHICAL MANIPULATION "

They are exploiting the innate characteristic of humans where if I do something nice for you, you subconsciously feel obliged to return the favor.

This concept is called "RECIPROCITY".

When I give you 2 pieces of candy along with your bill, you feel like you need to reciprocate my kindness. and how would you do that?

-> by leaving a larger tip.

APPLY THIS TO OTHER BUSINESSES .

Example:

If you run a bar, and you see a customer has almost finished his/her drink, instead of asking them if they want another, REFILL their drink and return to them for FREE.

They will appreciate this gesture and most likely would reward you with a LARGER tip.

CONCLUSION:

1- it IMPROVES your brand image,

2- you earn more INCOME.

(Even if it's not for you, at the very least, it benefits your employees).
